“I joined United Rheumatology as I have been in solo rheumatology practice for most of the last 36 years and want to stay independent. “Just a note of “thanks” and to mention a unique benefit from UR, at least to our group. As we discussed a couple of weeks ago, our DEXA is 20 years old or so and on its last legs.  I suspect many practices are in this same boat. We are a 4 person practice in Wisconsin.  We had contacted our DEXA manufacturer and had gone back and forth for weeks, but the price was still high, especially with the way insurance reimbursements have gone down. “As a member of the steering committee for United Rheumatology, when we were having preliminary discussions I emphasized the fact, on more than one occasion, that the driving force in getting our colleagues to join would be financial.  What I meant was that developing guidelines to protect the standard of care, providing assistance with revenue cycle management, and providing information about the business of rheumatology and government affairs, etc. were all important, but people would not join if there was a net expense involved.  Hence, the group purchasing organization would be critical in driving membership.  When it was decided to use Curascript SD as our preferred provider I examined what my practice of 4 rheumatologists was paying for infusible drugs at that time and what our costs would be if we changed to Curascript SD.  Over a 10 month period our savings would have been approximately $65,000.  The cost for our group to join was $10,000.  This does not include any of the recent agreements.  It also does not speak to potential cost savings in other areas, such as office phones, cell phones, revenue cycle, EMR purchases if needed, etc.  To me it seems like a “no-brainer”—getting the same infusible medications for much less money.  You can then consider all of the other valuable offerings of United Rheumatology.”
